PNG compression throws nothing away: decode and re-encode a PNG a hundred times and the pixels are identical. It also supports a full alpha channel, so edges can be genuinely semi-transparent rather than matted onto one background colour. Those two properties are why PNG is the default for screenshots, UI assets, and logos.
Photographs. Lossless compression cannot exploit the fact that the eye tolerates small errors in a continuous-tone image, so a photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same photo as a good-quality JPG or WebP. If the image is a photograph and does not need transparency, PNG is costing you bandwidth for no visible benefit.
A PNG can store 24-bit colour plus alpha, or it can use an indexed palette of up to 256 colours. Palette PNGs are dramatically smaller and are ideal for flat graphics; they are a poor fit for gradients, which band visibly. This is why two PNGs of the same dimensions can differ enormously in size.
PNG's alpha channel is the main reason to keep a file as PNG, and it is exactly what does not survive a JPG conversion. The transparent area becomes solid white, because JPG has nowhere to store transparency. Useful to know before sending a logo to a supplier who only accepts JPG — the white box is not a mistake anyone made, it is the format.

JPG has no transparency channel, so transparent pixels have to be filled with something. White is the usual choice. Convert to WebP instead if you need to keep transparency at a smaller size.
Not at 90 or 180 degrees — those are exact pixel rearrangements. Arbitrary angles require resampling, which does soften the image slightly.
Lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG at identical quality and also supports alpha. PNG remains the safer choice when a tool, printer, or older application in your pipeline might reject WebP.
