JPG compression discards image information the eye is least likely to notice. That is why a photo can be a tenth the size of its lossless equivalent, and also why the loss is not recoverable. Once saved, the discarded detail is gone from the file.
Every time a JPG is opened, edited, and re-saved, it is re-compressed and loses a little more. Do this repeatedly and artefacts accumulate around edges and in flat areas. Keep an original in a lossless format if a file will be edited more than once, and do all your edits in one pass when you can.
JPG has no alpha channel, so anything transparent gets flattened onto a solid background. Camera and phone JPGs also carry EXIF metadata — model, settings, timestamps, and often GPS coordinates — which travels with the file when you upload or email it.
Yes. They are the same format; .jpg exists because early Windows filenames were limited to three-character extensions.
Somewhere in the 80–90 range is the usual sweet spot for photographs: visually hard to distinguish from the original at a fraction of the size. Below about 70, artefacts become noticeable around sharp edges.
No. Converting to PNG stops any further loss but cannot restore what the JPG compression already discarded.
In most browser-based tools, yes — the image is decoded and re-encoded, so there is one generation of loss. Use a high quality setting for the output if that matters.
