Choosing the right image conversion tool

Format choice is a trade-off. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots, and anything with hard edges. JPG is lossy and has no transparency, but it is smaller and accepted almost everywhere. WebP is usually smaller than both at similar quality and supports transparency, though a few older tools still reject it. SVG stays sharp at any size but only for vector artwork.

One conversion catches people out: PNG to JPG discards transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white rather than left as-is. If you need a transparent result, convert to WebP or keep the PNG.
