WebP has a lossy mode that competes with JPG, a lossless mode that competes with PNG, and alpha transparency in both — plus animation. That combination is unusual and it is the main reason WebP has taken over as the default web image format: one format instead of choosing between three.
Lossy WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at comparable quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. On an image-heavy page that is a meaningful difference to load time, which is why most site generators now emit WebP automatically.
Every current browser supports WebP. The friction is elsewhere: some print services, older desktop applications, a few CMS uploaders, and various social and marketplace forms still expect JPG or PNG. Converting back is straightforward, but remember that going WebP-lossy to JPG means a second round of lossy compression.
A concrete measurement to go with the format comparison above: the same photograph at the same dimensions, as a lossless PNG and as WEBP. The WEBP is roughly a sixth of the size. On a page carrying a dozen images that is the difference between a fast load and a slow one, which is why most site build tools now emit WEBP by default.
